Why You Need to Join CSUEU

One of the comments that chapter activists often hear on campus is "Why should I join the Union? They are just holding me back from receiving a pay raise, and I could do better on my own, without them!"

To this, we must answer "Then why don't you do so?"

At any time, if your MPP manager feels so inclined, they can provide any member of the CSUEU bargaining units (2,5,7 and 9) with any of the following:

In-Range Progression - Ther minimum amount for this is 5%, but there is no upper-limit, despite what HR claims.

Bonus - Yes, your manager can pay you a lump-sum bonus. Why don't they? And why don't you ask them for one?

Reclassification - If you're doing the work of multiple employees, or are working outside your job description 51% of the time, you're eligible for a position reclassification. Request one from your manager.

Retention Bonus - This is the classic "pay me or trade me" situation. If you're ready to leave the campus, because you know you can make more money elsewhere, management can (and has!) paid employees a flat-rate rentention bonus in order to keep them here. Again, all you have to do is ask.

Stipend - A stipend is a temporary increase to your salary, for a finite amount of time, based on you agreeing to take on extra duties for a clearly defined period. The amount of the stipend can be negotiated by the employee, and there is no upper limit to the amount they can receive.

All these methods, and more are available to each campus employee, yet all were negotiated for you by the Union. Being a member of CSUEU really does pay off!

Member vs. Fee-payer - What's the Difference?

All CSUSB employees in bargaining units 2,5,7 and 9 are represented under the contract. However, they fall into 2 distinct groups: Member and fee-payer.

Member:

A full-member of CSUEU pays 1% of their total gross salary to the Union. You have to complete and sign a membership card before you are considerd a full member of CSUEU.

Fee-Payer

Every represented CSUSB employee is considered a fee-payer by defaut. Union fees are automatically deducted from an employee's paycheck, but this does NOT automatically make you a member of the Union. The automatic deduction for fee-payers is called the "fair share fee," which is only right, since these people receive protection under the contract, and have full access to the same salary increases and retirement programs that full CSUEU members receive.

A fee-payer is not a member of CSUEU, and has no right to either hold a union office, or to vote on the contract. Fee-Payers pay 99.8% of full membership dues, which works out to an average of 7 cents per month. If a fee-payer has an employment problem which is not grievable, such as discipline or termination, or discrimination, they may be forced to pay their own legal fees.

With the difference between a full-member and a fee payer usually less than $1.50 per year, is there any reason why you wouldn't want to become a member of CSUEU? For a membership application, contact a steward today.

Who is CSUEU?

The short answer to this question: You are! CSUEU is a Union, a collection of employees sharing a similar place of employement and job duties.

At the chapter and state officer levels, everyone involved with CSUEU is a volunteer - we do Union work on our own time, including weekends. The President of CSUEU, is given paid release from his or her CSU job during his or her term as President. Everyone else is a volunteer. Why? Because they care about the employees working within the CSU system, and want to try and asssist them in any way possible.

At CSU Headquarters in Sacramento, there are several paid staff. But these are UAW represented employees, they are not part of the CSU. Their purpose is only to assist us with clerical support, administration, bargaining, and expert input on labor issues.

Remember: A Union is nothing more than a collection of it's members, all working for the common good. Support CSUEU, and join today!
